Dealing with the advanced stages of cataracts can be a huge challenge for people who haven’t had corrective surgery.

While some people are able to live relatively normal lives with cataracts for years, the symptoms of cataracts only grow worse with time. Given enough time, advanced cataracts can make it almost impossible to see, and this impaired vision can limit a person’s independence and quality of life. Fortunately, there is a simple, effective solution to their problem: Cataract removal surgery is a procedure that allows people with cataracts to restore their vision almost instantly.

According to a recent survey conducted by Alcon, most people live happier, more productive lives after having cataract surgery.

  • More than 1,300 U.S. adults over the age of 60 took part in the Alcon survey, and about 75 percent of them said that they were significantly happier with their lives post-cataract surgery.
  • Additionally, they reported feeling more satisfied with their lives and even said that they gained a new appreciation for life in the months that followed their surgeries.

But the most surprising part of the survey was that more than 50 percent of the people who were polled said that they didn’t realize how much they were missing out on as a result of their cataracts.

  • People said that their cataracts took a huge emotional toll on their lives without them even recognizing it, and that they would recommend cataract surgery to others since it could improve their lives dramatically.
