Next time you’re somewhere in public, sit down in a place where you’ll see lots of people in front of you. Then, make a mental note of how many people walk by you without glasses versus with glasses. Chances are you’ll notice a lot of people wearing glasses. Thank goodness for glasses which help so many people with vision problems.

The Importance of Visiting an Eye Doctor

If you’ve never been to an eye doctor, now’s the time to see one. Why? Well, your eyes are very important in life, right? Just like you’d get your car’s oil changed or go to the dentist to have them check for cavities that need filling, it is wise to see an eye doctor. He or she can examine your eyes in ways you cannot do on your own. Oh sure, you could look into a mirror and notice something “off” or “odd” about your eyes, but chances are you wouldn’t be sure about a diagnosis.

A visit to the eye doctor is important for all people– not just for people with poor vision. Indeed, a visit to the eye doctor every now and then can catch eye issues (and other health problems like diabetes) before symptoms show up. Eye doctors check both close and distance vision. They test for glaucoma. A typical visit will not take up much of your time, but could very well improve your overall wellness.

So how often should you make an appointment with an eye doctor? Generally, it’s a smart idea to visit at least every other year if you are a healthy individual between the ages of 18-60; however, if you wear glasses or contacts or have other vision issues, you should make appointment more frequently. Also, the older a person gets, the more likely they are going to have to deal with vision problems like glaucoma, macular degeneration and/or corneal diseases, so older individuals should see the eye doctor at least once a year.

Meanwhile, if and when you experience sudden vision changes that don’t seem normal to you, or you have painful eyes, don’t hesitate to make an appointment to see an eye doctor. It’s better to have a professional offer guidance and help than to try and ignore problems “hoping they’ll just go away.” Your eyes are too important to not get checked by someone who knows all about eyes!
